Symbian still the most widespread mobile OS in 2011, Apple surges with the iPhone 4S

StatCounter has released its January-December 2011 data, and the results come as no surprise to someone who follows with unbiased eye the world's smartphone market. Symbian, it turns out, is still the most popular mobile OS worldwide, installed on 33.46% of devices, while iOS surged to second place, according to StatCounter, thanks to the breathtaking sales of the iPhone 4S at the end of the year.?The data is sourced worldwide, so probably the unabashed lead of Android and iOS in the West has been offset somewhat by Africa and Asia, where Nokia traditionally carries a quite significant footprint.
