BCom student is ready for WTO

Foreign Minister Bob Carr, Opposition Leader Tony Abbott and former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd were among the high profile politicians that Bachelor of Commerce student Natalie Ngo met with when she attended a briefing in Canberra to prepare for her role in the Global Voices Australian Youth Delegations to the World Trade Organisation Public Forum which is to be held in Switzerland in late September.

Hundreds of people applied to Global Voices to represent the University of Melbourne at the WTO Public Forum to be held in Geneva.

The briefing aims to prepare Natalie, and another five Youth Delegates, to write an in-depth research paper as part of her Research Fellowship with Global Voices in the lead-up to the WTO Public Forum. Natalie will receive a fully sponsored package from the Faculty of Business and Economics to attend the Forum.

?The experience was unbelievable to me because I couldn?t accept that it is real, it is happening and we were meeting the people who are running our country and trying their best? Natalie said, ?I learnt that politicians are people who are just doing their best?.

?In addition to the politicians, I realised that there are so many smart and talented young people out there who I don?t get to meet every day and it makes me want to better myself and equip myself with stronger knowledge of current affairs and politics? she said.

During the two day visit in late August, Natalie also met with Shadow Foreign Minister Julie Bishop, Trade Minister Craig Emerson and the Ambassador of Switzerland, His Excellency Marcel Stutz.

?I really enjoyed asking Craig Emerson questions one-on-one and hearing about his opinion on trade practices and found that Tony Abbott was just an ordinary person who was very excited to meet us? Natalie said ?I thought Julie Bishop was the most amazing woman; truly intelligent and she seemed genuinely happy to be there?.

Hubert Wu from Global Voices said that ?this is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity for Natalie?.

The Delegates also attended Question Time where they received a special mention on the floor of the Australian Parliament by the Acting Speaker Anna Burke, which was Natalie?s favourite experience from the trip because it was so heated. Natalie was also able to attend a media workshop by Channel Ten?s Hugh Riminton.

Natalie found Julie Bishop inspiring, ?I could see why she is Tony Abbott?s Deputy? she said.

Dean of the Faculty of Business and Economics, Professor Paul Kofman, said ?We are proud and excited to support Natalie in representing the Faculty of Business and Economics and the University of Melbourne at such an influential and meaningful event?

The WTO Public Forum is a major event at which governments, non-governmental organisations, academics, businesses and students can come together to discuss the multilateral trading system, this year focusing on the question ?is multilateralism in crisis?? Natalie will write her research paper on the trade-related aspect of intellectual property, considering Australians obligations under certain agreements that outline a minimum standard for every member country to uphold in protecting intellectual property.

?I would advise others seeking experiences like this to show people you have an eager and willing attitude, and make it clear you want to better yourself? Natalie said.

Natalie attended The Mac.Robertson Girls? High School and is now a Bachelor of Commerce student at The University of Melbourne. She is one of two recipients of the prestigious Commerce Opportunity Bursary Scholarship offered by the Faculty of Business and Economics. Natalie hopes to enter into the Melbourne JD upon completion of her course. She says this experience has affirmed her desire to major in Commercial and Corporate Law.

Football kicks off 2012 against Toronto
Golden Hawks open season on the road for fifth straight year

WATERLOO, Ont. (September 1, 2012) - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks football team will step onto the field for their first competitive game of the 2012 season on Monday night when they travel to Toronto to take on the Varsity Blues.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and the game will be webcast live on SSN Canada.

For the Hawks, the team that steps onto the field on Monday will be one that is dramatically different than the one that walked off the field following their OUA Quarter-final loss last year to the Queen's Gaels. Gone are the likes of Shane Kelly, Shamawd Chambers, Dillon Heap, George Kourtesiotis, Sam Aird and Shane Herbert, and in their place steps a new generation of talent that will look to extend the Hawks postseason streak to 10 seasons.

The biggest changes to the purple and gold's lineup is on the offensive side of the ball. While there has been much debate during the offseason as to who will be handed the starting quarterback job, it appears the job will be handed to either incumbent backup Steve Fantham of London, Ont., or NCAA transfer Travis Eman of Brampton, Ont. Those two players have gotten the majority of the snaps in practice over the past week so it is expected that one of those two will make their first career start on Monday night. The receiving core has also been overhauled with the loss of three starters. However, there is still plenty of talent for offensive coordinator Ryan Pyear to focus his offence around. Alex Anthony of Victoria, B.C., Kelvin Muamba of Mississauga, Ont., Karsten Beney of Waterloo, Ont., and Anton Bennett of Toronto, Ont., will all provide speed and skill to the Hawks attack. Finally, after Bennett's shift to receiver, the Hawks will also boast a new starting running back for 2012. Second year back Tyrrel Wilson of Hamilton, Ont., is favoured to gain the starting job after averaging 8.5 yards per carry on 21 attempts in his rookie season. However, Wilson will be pushed by Lance Freeman of Denver, Colo., who missed 2011 due to injury, as well as rookie Eric Guiltinan of London, Ont. Defensively, Laurier boasts a strong, veteran group highlighted by a very deep linebacking core. Fifth year senior Mitchell Bosch of Langley, B.C., along with Drew Galpin of Kitchener, Ont., and Nick Sapone of Richmond Hill, Ont., will receive the majority of playing time this year but keep an eye on prized rookie recruit Andrew McWhinnie of Waterloo, Ont., who will also get a chance to show his talent. The defensive line could prove to be a difference maker for the purple and gold in 2012 as a talented group of returning players, featuring Ben Ivany of Schomberg, Ont., Alex Brouwers of Campbellford, Ont., Asante Mizan of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Ese Mrabure-Ajufo of Mississauga, Ont., will make life miserable for opposing quarterbacks.

With a talented, yet unproven team, facing the Varsity Blues may be a perfect way for this young squad to start off the season. In their last 10 meetings with Toronto, Laurier holds a 9-1 edge in victories with their only loss coming as a result of using an ineligible player two years ago.?

Despite this advantage, the Hawks will need to be prepared to face a team that is on the rebound. The Varsity Blues posted a 3-5 record in 2011, their best finish in more than 10 years, and missed out on the final playoff spot by one game.

2012 NFL roster cuts ? Matt Overton?s journey

And so it goes.? A little over six weeks ago NFL Training Camps opened with optimistic energy.?? Thirty-two clubs entered the official start of the 2012 Preseason with hopes of a Super Bowl Championship, playoff appearance, or at least some signs of improvement upon their efforts from the season before.? The arduous ?process of assembling 90 man rosters over the course of seven months started with? NFL front offices looking under every rock, checking every nook and cranny for available talent to improve their chances this season; Reserve Futures, Unrestricted Free Agency, the 2012 NFL Draft, trades, waiver claims and street Free Agents.

Putting together a roster

Through offseason conditioning, OTA?s, mini-camps and two-a-days, the NFL?s pool of professional football players have been under the microscope of evaluation on the road to 53.? Today the ?Turk cometh?.? Teams were required to reduce their rosters by 22 from the first cuts to 75.? There were some surprises, there always are.? Veteran stars on their last legs were sent packing, rookies just getting started were told they were finished.? Most of the media coverage focused on those that ?didn?t? versus those that ?did?.

We know the names of the top draft picks and high dollar Free Agents cemented on to rosters via the financial investments made by their clubs in hopes of getting a reciprocal performance, or ?bang for their buck?.? But how about the ?no names??? How about the players that have toiled in obscurity, working on their second, third and even fourth opportunity to make an NFL roster?? These are the guys that run down and cover punts, secure the edge on PAT?s, and make the tackles, blocks, runs and interceptions late in the 4^th quarter of Preseason games.

Players GM?s are most proud of

As General Manager these were the players you were most proud of.? These were the guys that you saw a glimpse of something on a Preseason tape, whose Tuesday morning workout caught your eye late in December, or who had been signed as an undrafted College Free Agent and were just looking to prove they could play.

In 2010 I spent a year in the United Football League with the expansion Omaha Nighthawks.? We filled our roster primarily with aged vets looking for one last opportunity to break back into the NFL and secure that last chance to show they still had something left.? But there was a small group of guys defined by a Preseason play, a Tuesday workout or undrafted status, that filled out our final roster.

Matt Overton ? Western Washington?

Matt Overton was one of those guys.? Matt grew up in Tracy, California and starred on the local high school team as a two-way four year starter.? He went to Diablo Valley College before transferring to Western Washington where he was a team captain and two-year starter at defensive end and long snapper.? Overton was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2007 by the Seattle Seahawks but never made the active roster.? His journey would go through the Tri-Cities Fever of the Arena 2 League, the Florida Tuskers of the UFL, back for another camp with the Seattle Seahawks and then to Omaha for the past two seasons.

Overton?s love of the game and kids would lead him to co-found ?Led By Pros? in Omaha, NE with fellow Nighthawk teammates Chad Hall and Maurice Clarett.? ?Led By Pros offers a youth football academy and helps young athletes to succeed in life and in sport.? ?Matt has passed on to aspiring young football players in inner city Omaha the idea of having a dream and never giving up.? He not only talks the talk, but walks the walk.

Indianapolis Colts sign a long snapper

A team looking to rebuild took a chance on this two-time Training Camp, Arena 2, UFL veteran.? On April 3, 2012, Matt Overton signed a contract with the Indianapolis Colts in hopes of fulfilling a dream he?s pursued for the past five years; through Seattle, Kennewick, Orlando, back to Seattle and Omaha.? At 27 he?s no rookie, and a lot of players his age have already come and gone in the National Football League.? Overton toiled through OTA?s, mini-camps, and two-a-days into the Preseason with hopes of showing his consistency as a reliable and accurate long snapper.

He snapped against St. Louis, on to Pittsburgh, out in D.C., and then back home one last time versus Cincinnati.? He endured the limited, but high pressure situations in practice, snapped against the stopwatch, snapped against a net. Matt Overton snapped, snapped, snapped.

Today the singular absence of a phone call from a personnel intern or General Manager Ryan Grigson?s assistant ?snapped? him on to the 2012 Indianapolis Colts Active Roster.? Not all NFL roster cut stories are about high profile players.? Many are about Fever, and Tuskers, and Nighthawks.

Maldives warns ousted president to halt protests

The Maldives government on Sunday accused former president Mohamed Nasheed of "seeking to inflame" unrest in the island nation and said unruly protests by his supporters would no longer be tolerated.

Nasheed claimed he was forced out of power in February by a coup, but an international investigation last week concluded that he had resigned after a police and military mutiny and weeks of demonstrations against his leadership.

Since his fall, supporters of Nasheed have expressed their anger at regular protests in the island capital Male and have often clashed with police.

The new government, led by President Mohamed Waheed, said on Sunday that the protests must end after the investigation found that the transfer of power was legal and constitutional.

"Former president Nasheed whilst he has reluctantly accepted the findings of (the report) continues to call for and partake in violent demonstrations," the government said in a statement. "(He) is seeking to inflame the situation."

It added that Nasheed's Maldivian Democratic Party "should cease violent demonstrations and not encourage unruly mobs" and warned that the government would "no longer condone" the protests.

Minor clashes broke out on Thursday night in Male between MDP supporters and police after the Commonwealth-backed report into the "coup" allegations was released.

Its findings were welcomed by the United Nations and the United States.

The Maldives, a string of islands set in the Indian Ocean, is famed for its luxury tourism resorts but political upheavals and dire poverty have raised tensions among its 330,000 Sunni Muslims citizens.

NEW YORK (AP) - Amazon.com Inc. says it has sold out of its Kindle Fire tablet computer amid expectations of a new model for the holiday season.

The retailer's website now directs customers to used Fires available from other merchants.

The Internet retailer has a major press conference scheduled for next Thursday in Santa Monica, Calif. It's widely expected to reveal a new model of the Fire there, so Thursday's announcement that the first model is "sold out" suggests that Amazon halted production a while ago to retool for a new model.

Amazon launched the $199 tablet last November. It was the first Kindle with a color screen and the ability to run third-party applications, placing it in competition with Apple Inc.'s iPad, at half the price of the cheapest iPad.

Amazon doesn't say how many Fires it has sold, but says it captured 22 percent of U.S. tablet sales over nine months. That would make it the second-most popular tablet, after the iPad. Tom Mainelli at research firm IDC said that figure matches his estimate of 6.7 million Fires sold.

Separately, ABI Research said Thursday that sales of dedicated e-readers, like the non-Fire, black-and-white Kindles, peaked last year. It expects worldwide sales of e-readers at 11 million in 2012, down from 15 million in 2011.

The research firm expects tablets to outsell e-readers 9 to 1 this year, despite costing four or five time as much. Still, e-readers won't go away completely, ABI analyst Joshua Flood said.

"We believe there will always be a niche market for the dedicated reading device for voracious readers, business travelers, and educational segments, particularly ones that are low-priced," Flood said.

Amazon could update the rest of its Kindle line at next week's event, too. The current models were launched a year ago. In the intervening time, competitor Barnes & Noble Inc. has launched a Nook e-reader with a built-in screen illuminator for reading in the dark.

Amazon itself was the main outlet for the Kindle Fire. However, Staples stores recently sold it for $179. It wasn't immediately known whether some stores still had it on shelves.

Shares of Amazon, which is based in Seattle, fell $1.57, or 0.6 percent, to $245.55 in midday trading Thursday.
